{sigh}

It's a wonder how someone can be so content, and at the same time feel like everything is in a complete upheaval. How can things be so wrong, yet so right?

Beanpole had his first orchestra concert last night. He was fan-freakin-tastic!!! I teared up several times. He was able to sit right on the end of the second semi-circle, so the audience was right next to him. He was completely embarrassed by us, but I caught him peeking in between people's heads to see if we were looking. I smiled and winked at him every chance I got. A special treat of DQ ice cream, and all was well with the world.

Little Linebacker was sick yesterday. I knew something was up when, the night before, he'd gone to bed on his own, falling asleep in a position only an unborn baby would find comfortable. A couple hours later, he awoke and ventured downstairs where his father and I sat working at our computers, glazed look in his eyes, sad scowl on his face. I asked if he was okay (I thought maybe he'd thrown up...it was that kind of look), but he said he was alright, nothing hurt, no accidents, nada. I ushered him back upstairs, and after a proper tucking in, he was asleep within seconds. The next morning? BAM. 102.8 degrees. My poor boy. This morning? No fever, no glazed eyes, my hyperactive child was back in business.

Cakes has been sick as well. Her pediatrician said it could be a sinus infection, but it could also be strep (strep in babies present just like a sinus infection, not like in adults where it's accompanied by swollen tonsils and bumps and all that fun stuff). She was around someone who was diagnosed a few days prior with strep; that's the only reason he mentioned it. So she's on day 6 of medication, and although she's more like her normal self (which these days is a bubbly, talkative, squirming bundle of baby), but she's nowhere near well. We still run her humidifier at night and during naps, still suction her nose, and still change diapers affected by her antibiotics. Normally, though, she is just as cute as a button, has about a gazillion nicknames, and has transformed our home. She's quite enjoying her cereal, carrots, and butternut squash (she was supposed to get sweet potatoes last night, but the concert and all...no time for taters), and she's growing like mad. The whole starting of veggies makes me wish for spring, as I've received my Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds catalog and am hoping to order and actually plant a veggie-full garden this year, mostly for homegrown Cakes-food, but maybe some maters and cukes for me as well (oh, if only I could get The Boys to eat a veggie besides corn, which isn't really even a veggie!).

Big Boss Man is upstairs asleep as I type, trying to fight what we first thought was a bought of Pizza Hut thin crust pizza, but now has lasted way too long and might actually be the flu. We had grand plans to get our taxes done this morning, but we'll see. I work this afternoon, and then for the rest of the week as well. So if it doesn't happen today, we're looking at Saturday at the earliest. Here's hoping whatever this bug is doesn't completely knock him out of the race.

Back in January, I hurt my back at work. For some reason, I can make filing a small folder a dangerous job. I thought I threw my back out (I've never done that before, but I sure felt like it looks like people in the movies and on tv feel like when it happens). But I was able to stand back up at first, so I knew that wasn't right. I thought maybe I just pulled a muscle, so I tried to walk around the back of the pharmacy for awhile. A few hours later, not only was it not getting better, it was getting decidedly worse, to the point where if I took a step, I had to support my entire body weight by leaning on the counter. I ended up leaving early to go to the emergency room at the same hospital I gave birth to Cakes. I had to be wheeled out of the store in our "for customer use" wheelchair, which was thoroughly embarrassing.

Turns out, after IV morphine and exams by a couple different doctors and xrays and more IV morphine (woohoo!!), I herniated a disc. No one told me why it happened or what to do to make it not happen again. I was sent home on 2 day bedrest, then 4 days of no lifting. I saw an occupational therapist who released me for restricted duty one week after it happened, then full duty, no restrictions, 2 weeks after it happened. Now I definitely feel better, but I still get extraordinarily sore after a day of work (we stand the whole day, except a 20-30 minute lunch break). I have been trying to reach my workman's comp claims examiner for, let's see, this would be the 6th business day, and I haven't heard a thing. I also tried calling her supervisor, left a message there too, and nothing. I should have a check coming to me (granted, it's for one day's work, but that's still one day's work), and I'd like to see if I can at least follow up with my primary to get some kind of exercises to do to strengthen my back. I'm also fighting with the subrogation department about getting my ER copay back...$100 because I wasn't thinking clearly when I was there. Oddly, I've left 3 messages with that woman as well.

I am also embarking on an expedition of my own. I've been trying (for years, it seems) to think of some way I could make money "on the side", so to speak. I believe this plan might actually be profitable, although I'm not sure how long it might take to reap the benefits. I've started on it already, although technically just in my mind. I'm keeping a book with me at all times to jot down notes and ideas. Will this be our meal ticket? No, I'd say not (I mean maybe in my wildest dreams, but not in the reality we live in daily). But it will definitely help, and it's something I'm good at already (as opposed to sewing, where I have issues, although I've not given up on my etsy dream yet either...just on hold).

Someone be honest with me, please.

Is there an online site that's like, I don't know, sewing for dummies? I have a machine, I couldn't even tell you what kind it is. Someone gave it to me (which is odd since, I. don't. sew.), and I was going to either ebay it or donate it. However, I've recently become inspired by some blogs (namely Cynthia, Lisa, and Penny) that I'm actually considering lugging the old heavy thing out and trying to learn to do...something...on it (besides using it for a clothes rack, like the treadmill that we haven't gotten rid of yet). However, I don't have the time or money, really, to take a sewing class somewhere. My mom said she'd teach me, which will work, but I don't get over there as often as I'd like either.

So...I need a site...any site. I mean, one can find anything online, right? So maybe I should google "sewingfordummies.com" or something like that. I've found lots of sights that have patterns for stuff, but none that tell me actually {blush} how to thread a machine.

I guess that's my new purpose in life...to find a site that will make me go from a sewing-know-nothing to a sewing-know-it-all. And you're along for the ride! How exciting!

****Author's Edit: I actually hauled the thing out of my basement and dusted it off. It's a Singer Touch Tronic 2001 machine, and Singer wants $15 for a replacement manual!!! So I'd better sell something on ebay before I go spending money on this. Darn it!****

****Author's Edit #2: I'm a complete moron. I was downstairs flipping some laundry around, and discovered a box o' stuff that was gifted to me by the same woman that gave me the sewing machine. Lo and behold! The owner's manual, along with all kinds of stuff I didn't remember a sewing machine needed (like the speed controller...yeah, I'm a moron), plus a bunch of fabric that I'll have to go through tomorrow and wash and organize. Now I'm really excited!!****

You want to talk about a bad day?

They just keep on coming. Yesterday I had to work (typical), and although it was work, it was a truly slow day, compared to the hell we've been going through since new years. I did, however, find out that one of my best friends in the whole world is transferring stores. She's a pharmacist, so pregnant that she's about ready to burst, and currently drives over an hour to get from her house to our store (and back again after shift). So...I do not blame her at all for transferring to this store, as it's brand new, it's about a 20 minute drive from her house, she's going to have a brand new babe at home, and who wouldn't want to spend more time with their child instead of in the car? That being said, I couldn't even speak when she told me. I know this was wrong, as she's just as emotional as me and needed support that she made the right decision, but I was afraid if I opened my mouth, I'd start bawling like a baby again (I'd already taken one trip to the little girl's room for that purpose). So I left at the end of my shift, having not really talked to anyone after her news, and now I feel horrible. I just can't believe she's leaving.

Then I get home, and not 10 minutes after I walk in the door, a glass is broken in our living room by Little Linebacker...on our carpeted floor...right in the walking path. So I banish The Boys to their room and grab the vacuum cleaner. I vacuum for about 3 minutes, then it starts making this noise...sort of like how I'd imagine a squirrel stuck in a drain pipe would sound. And I'm not near done vacuuming the miniscule shards of glass from our needs-to-be-replaced-badly-anyway carpet. So I give up, and decide to simply warn BBM to not walk around barefoot when he gets home until I can figure out the stupid vacuum cleaner.

So I head back out into the kitchen, as I'd collected a pile of junk too big for the vacuum hose, and I see it...all over my kitchen floor...water. Plain as day, coming from my dishwasher. It's all soapy, because the dishwasher is right in the middle of the wash cycle. So the best thing I can say about that is that my kitchen floor got a slight cleaning too. So I turned off the dishwasher, planned on throwing in the towel (literally, as I head to the closet to grab a towel to mop things up with), and head to bed. On the way there, my mind went ker-flooey (baby brain, anyone?), and I totally didn't grab a towel. I just went straight to bed and read my book until BBM got home and informed me there was water all over the kitchen floor...CRAP! I'd forgotten the towel! He got one for me and laid it over the wet mess in the kitchen, and the last thing I remember is drifting off to one of the most fitful sleeps I've had in awhile.

And now it's today. The greatest thing is happening today: Big Boss Man and I have a DATE!!! We're dropping The Boys off at my mom's house across the river, and going to see a movie I think, although we don't even know what's out. And The Boys are actually staying overnight at Nana's house, so I get to come home and not worry about waking up with them in the morning! Then tomorrow when I drive to pick The Boys up, my sister will be there, dropping off my maternity clothes!! WOOT!!! So hopefully, the next 48 hours will be filled with joy and happiness and ease, even if I do have laundry to fit into that schedule at some point, and maybe shopping for a brand new vacuum cleaner and dishwasher!

Oh no, please, allow me.

Let me share what kind of a Complete. Moron. I. Am.

So you all know how terribly excited I've been about my ebay purchases, right? Well, I bought this cute little number for a $5 best offer...5 bucks!! I was stoked, and I've been waiting (again, patiently) for it to arrive. Really cool seller, excellent stuff, honest about a broken zipper, but was sending a replacement zipper with the dress and everything!

So I come home from work today, and WHAMMO! There it is, sitting on my front porch. YIPPEE!!! So I get it inside, and start unwrapping...and unwrapping...and...uhm, unwrapping some more. Then I tried unwrapping it. And for some reason, my hands just would not cooperate, and that stupid little envelope wouldn't open...it was stuck with some industrial strength sticky stuff or something.

So, being the brilliant woman that I am, I grab the nearest pair of scissor (God help us all), and think to myself, if I pull up on the cuts, I'll only get the envelope...it is, after all, folded over...so there's envelope underneath the envelope I'll be cutting.

Yeah.

Right.

I could easily try to blame my children, since they came running into the bunker as I was almost finishing. Then, my scissors betrayed me! And cut the fabric. CUT. THE. FABRIC. I was almost in tears. Now granted, I'm a freakin' emotional basketcase anyway (just ask BBM, he'll attest to it, I'm sure). But I just paid good money for this dress, this adorable, cutesy, make-me-feel-a-little-less-whale-ish dress, and then I go and ruin it. FortheloveofPete.

Luckily, the cut is right on the bottom, so I guess I'll try the dress on and see if it could be hemmed a little higher without me reminding anyone of Brittney Spears in any choice of her numerous panty scandals. If it's alright, then I'll hem it up, right above the cut.

Oh, who am I kidding?? I'll take it somewhere and get them to hem it up, right above the cut. I'll also have them install the new zipper. And my $5 find will become a $20-30 expense. I'd show a picture, but it's really that embarrassing. Ness has just informed me that Fashion Bug is having a ginormous sale right now (70% off, baby!!), so I may have to give up ebay altogether. Either that, or pay sellers extra to package their shipments in Boxes. Only. I can handle cardboard and tape. Keep the extra strength sticky stuff away from me.

Purging.

I've been going through our office, affectionately called The Bunker (don't ask), and cleaning out my side of old papers, stuff I just don't need or use anymore, you know: Spring Cleaining a good couple months early. I certainly hope that things are supposed to look a lot worse before they get better, because they look worse. I have so many things I wanted to get done today, and all of them require an enormous amount of time to finish, which I have, but they all require patience too, which, uhm, I don't have. I'm absolutely going to make the cinnamon rolls though, because I bought whole milk special for them, and it will go bad if I don't do it soon. Plus, I figure I could always use the extra 2-3000 calories that eating those will entail. {insert rolley eye thingie here}

I would also really like to finish priming the living room, and also The Boys' room. That way, there's a destinct possibility that I could actually {GASP!} paint tomorrow. Yes ladies and gentlemen, that's right, we've got COLORS picked out. Incredible. We've only lived here for 6 years now.

And a budget must (repeat MUST) be made today. If we can't figure it out alone, I'm calling in the reserves. I don't quite know who those people are yet, so friends and family...if you get a call from the Ax household today or tomorrow, be prepared...be mentally prepared. And be afraid.

And laundry is actually down to almost what I'd call a bare minimum, since Dad did much of it while he was here and I was at work (thanks again Dad!). I also got an ink refill kit for our printer...God help me...I'll try that tonight, as we have things that must be copied and faxes that must be received and pages that must be printed. I can't remember the last time we had ink.

My father-in-law is actually doing very well now. Talk has been mentioned of releasing him to rehab, and apparently he ate some lasagna a couple nights ago and didn't complain one bit! Way to go Ax Man!!!

So...if I'm going to get all this stuff done, I must lift my luscious behind from this chair (I think my cat would like to sit here anyway), and get to work.

Have a wonderful Saturday everyone! And remember, no hiding from me with your caller ID...I'll get through eventually ;)

Partial ritual, but early.

I went to the library early this week, last night as a matter of fact, for one reason: I went online to order some books that I'd found on amazon.com (order them from the library I mean. Duh...why would I spend money on them if I haven't read them first?!?). So I sign into my library account, and BAM!! I get hit in the face with 11 books (10 books and 1 dvd) overdue. Wha?? I know I turned all my books in. Oh wait.

Am I married? Is that my husband that's always wandering around the house? Whose socks I unfold when I wash them?

Yup, that's him. Big Boss Man.

{sigh}

So I head to the library, stopping at Walgreens first to get some soda and get cash back to pay off this enormous fine (or at least pay it down to where I can actually check out books again), then head to the library.

First I can't find the one book BBM requested I check out for him. I had to ask for help in the library for the first time since 3rd grade. But lo and behold, they have it! Then, off to the computer to refind the books I was trying to request earlier in the evening. I have a list of 13 books. I'm sure they won't have all of them at this location, so I'll get what they have and request a location change for the remainder.

They have one. Count it: ONE book (mwua ah ah).

{sigh again}

It's not like they have the books at different locations and I have to have my patience tested (of which I have little when it comes to things like this)...they don't have any of them even in the library system. The very lovely woman at the counter tells me I can request that the library acquire them though, online when I get home.

Then I go to pay my fine. $41.15. Who owes $41 to the library??? Well I did. And I don't anymore. I brought it down to a reasonable $10 and some change, which made the librarian very happy, and made my cheeks turn less reddened than they were when she told me the total.

So I get the book. It's hysterical so far. It's called Mommy Tracked by Whitney Gaskell. Great read. Go. Check it out. I'll be here when you get back.

I'm feeling very...disheartened.

There is a song in the aforementioned L'il Abner called Progress is the Root of All Evil. I'm going to use my poetic license to change that title to Money is the Root of All Evil. Truly. I know for fact that there are people in the world who have riches beyond counting and are desperately unhappy. I also know some very poor people whose cup runneth over. I, myself, just don't get it...I haven't reached that spot in my life.

I don't want to be rich. Far from it, in fact. I don't want a big house, because that's just more for me to clean. I don't want a nicer car (I really love my van...although I would like an ol' beater truck, but that's more for convenience, and would be in addition to the van). I don't want the newest cell phone that's the size of the 'enter' key on my keyboard and as thin as a playing card. I'm happy with my Samsung SGH-X497. No boats, no vacation home in Tuscany, no private jet.

I am, however, a worry wart by nature. I don't know which parent I inherited that gene from (thankyouverymuch Mom & Dad), but I've definitely got it. They'd probably claim that it skips a generation, and that they're not at fault (probably a valid point). I worry from day to day about making ends meet. I don't remember being poor as a kid, so I guess my parents were pretty good about hiding money troubles. I, on the other hand, am not so good at that task. I make sure that my children know that we can't go to the movies (or McDonalds, or the go cart track) every single night because we don't have the money to spend frivilously like that. I also make sure to teach them that finishing school (meaning high school and college) is detrimental to making anything above minimum wage, and even that's no guarantee.

There are thing we have that we don't need. We don't need cable tv. We don't need our cell phones (although that is becoming more and more a valid arguement these days, for safety reasons). We do need internet, but that's for school purposes only (blogging and surfing are just perks). We don't need two vehicles, but it makes two adults with differing schedules a whole lot easier to bear. If we got rid of these things, making ends meet would be easier. We're probably be a closer family too, I suppose, as we'd be forced by necessity to do more things together. We are not to that point. We are close, but no quite there. All I want is to live without worry...without the worry of making those ends meet...those ends that sometimes seem on opposite sides of the Earth.

I guess I'm writing because it seems so hopeless. It seems an impossible mountain to climb...an unrelenting battle not of sword and shield, but dollars and cents. It's demoralizing, watching your coworkers order lunch every day, yet you have to refrain because you have a certain amount of money to last until Friday, and lunch out just ain't in the budget. It's horrifying when your children want holiday decorations on your house, but goodness if the prices don't go up, up, up every year! It's a string of lights and a ghost, for crying out loud!

I know there are lessons to be learned here. And I'm writing more to rant, rave, and vent than any other reason. We've made our beds, and now we're learning to get comfortable in them. Hopefully, someone will read this who is full of dispair, and they'll realize that they're not the only one. Someone else acted foolishly and is now paying the price, trying desperately to dig out of the hole they'd quite easily dug for themselves, all the while keeping the standard of living that they've grown accustomed to.

Rejoice, my friends, for you are not alone.
